 Abstract:  George W. Beadle was an American Civil War soldier who served in the 10th Regiment of Ohio Infantry, and later, in the 18th Independent Battery of Ohio Light Artillery. After the war he settled in Plainwell, Michigan. The collection consists of correspondence, Civil War military records, a certificate designating Beadle as a notary public, copies of Bible lessons, and a receipt. The collection pertains primarily to the Civil War experiences of Beadle and his wife, Rachel Smith, and includes correspondence which reflects the effects of the war on the personal lives of the soldiers and their families. In addition there is some information on Beadle's military units.

 Abstract:  Edward F. Nydegger (1831-1909) was a native of Aarberg, Switzerland who immigrated with his family to the United States in 1850 and settled in Weinsberg, Ohio. During the American Civil War he served in the 11th regiment, Indiana Infantry, and sketched many of the scenes he encountered during his travels. The collection consists of a scrapbook containing penciled drawings of Civil War scenes, a chronicle of the Nydegger family's emigration from Switzerland to Ohio in 1850, a family genealogical history, the Nydegger coat of arms, a Swiss tax receipt, a religious card from Nydegger's teacher in Aarberg, a record of Nydegger's experiences as a soldier, newspaper clippings, and religious mottos drawn and embellished by Nydegger.

 Abstract:  Correl Smith was a Captain in Company G, 19th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, during the American Civil War. Commissioned as a First Lieutenant on September 15, 1861, Smith assisted in organizing the 19th OVI during its muster at Alliance, Stark County, Ohio. Smith was promoted to Captain on January 2, 1863, and discharged from service on October 4, 1864. The collection consists of a diary kept by Captain Smith during the Civil War.

 Abstract:  The Richards family settled in Hinckley Township, Medina County, Ohio, prior to 1838. Willard Richards married Alvira Ann Whedon in 1838, and they raised seven children. In 1861, their eldest son, Myron, enlisted in Battery A, First Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Light Artillery. He returned to farming in Hinckley Township in 1865, and the following year, married Romelia Noragon. They raised two children, Oliver Richards and Margie Richards. In 1891, the Richards family moved to Lincoln, Nebraska. In the 1910s, Margie Richards became a physical education instructor at the University of California, Southern Branch (University of California, Los Angeles). The collection consists of correspondence, certificates, journals, genealogical notes, wills, military papers, and legal documents.

 Abstract:  Amelia Marx (1849-1900) was a Cleveland, Ohio, Jew, the daughter of Feist Marx and the wife of Joseph Strauss. Her three brothers, Charles, Edward and Moses, all served in the Civil War. The collection consists of photocopies of correspondence and miscellaneous documents, including naturalization papers, report cards, business agreements and recipes, all relating to the Marx, Strauss and Hawkins families. The collection is relevant to the study of 19th century American Jews, with special attention to their participation in the Civil War. Included is a letter to Edward Marx that refers to Lee's surrender and Lincoln's assassination. Another letter, dated 1865, comments on the oil boom near Meadville, Pennsylvania.

Ward apparently saw little battle action with his regiment while stationed in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama. the collection consists of letters written by Ward to friends, including Miss Artie M. Dickson of Olivesburgh, Richland County, Ohio, during the Civil War, describing his general duties, drills, marches, lack of food, and other aspects of camp life, as well as his own feelings about the war and its causes and the competence of the military leadership.

 Abstract:  George W. Landrum (1830-1863) was a Kentucky native who moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. During the American Civil War he served first in the 6th Ohio Infantry Regiment (the "Guthrie Gray" Regiment) and later as a 1st Lieutenant in the Signal Corps of the 2nd Ohio Infantry Regiment. He died at Chickamauga in September 1863. The collection consists primarily of typewritten transcripts of letters sent to Landrum's sister, Amanda Wilson (Mrs. Obed J. Wilson), containing descriptions of camp life and various military encounters in which Landrum took part during the Civil War, such as Chaplin Hills (Perryville, Kentucky.) and Stone River (Murfreesboro, Tennessee).
